You pay for clicks. For example, with Google's Adwords, you decide on a series of words or phrases that are relevant to your ad. Google, and others, only makes money when your ad is clicked,Google, Bing and the others, rewards relevancy. Say your ad appears on the Google Search page 1000 times in a day. Google only makes money if someone clicks on your ad. So they are happier if your ad is clicked say 30 times rather than 10 times - consequently they reward you by charging you less per click! You could be paying far more for your click than you need. Google could be bringing you 100 customers a day rather than 30 - for the same money.
